song du jour 30/11/10

passion pit are awesome and this song i have chosen embodies all that is great about music; it instantly puts a smile straight on your face, gets your head nodding like the churchill dog on speed and your foot twitching like an epileptic at a rave. so good that calvin harris felt obliged to provide a fantastic remix, the bounder.

so with that in mind my song du jour is "the reeling" from the album "manners". think hot chip, simian and peter, bjorn and john. nuff said.

song du jour 29/11/10

I don't know much about the knack. you can read about them here. understandably "my sharona" was a #1 hit in america, and became the number one song of 1979. i wasn't really aware of it until a saw and became obsessed with the 1994 film "reality bites". the song is synonymous with the film for me and anything that makes me think of winona ryder is fine by me.

let it snow

the weather is awful. this is snow joke, it's snow fun at all! so, i thought i would throw some levity at the bad weather situation by way of some tenuous musical associations. after all, there's no business like snow business!

things i like, things i hate

no. 1

i hate it when you have something on your face and nobody tells you. not even your girlfriend...

song du jour 26/11/10

the national are a band who only recently came to my attention when they had a special about them on youtube and i watched some of their videos. i was immediately drawn to the deep baritone of singer matt berninger and the images invoked by his lyrics.

beat it!

the afrobeat influence.
as far as i know, it is universally agreed that afrobeat was created by fela kuti. wikipedia states "afrobeat is a combination of traditional yoruba music, jazz, highlife, funk and chanted vocals, fused with percussion and vocal styles, popularised in africa in the 1970s. Its main creator was the nigerian multi-instrumentalist and bandleader fela kuti, who gave it its name... it was kuti who coined the term afrobeat... afrobeat features chants, call-and-response vocals, and complex, interacting rhythms.". but i'm not going to talk about that; there is plenty of info about him out there and it's not what i'm really into.

i'm loving vampire weekend's latest album "contra". it's not been out of my car since i bought it.

preppy white boys with a facination for world music, specifically afrobeat. does't sound like it should work does it? but work it does, like peanut butter and jam or deep fried mars bars.

so with that in mind my song du jour is "white sky" from the album "contra". think paul simon being dry humped by a college debating team whilst david byrne watches from the shadows with satisfied grin.
