song du jour 20/12/10

I'm not really a massive smiths fan. there are a lot of their songs that i like but over all morrisey's voice and the general samey-ness of many of the songs gets a bit too much. there are definately a handful of their tunes that stand out, and for me this track is by far the best. the reason for that is most likely that it isn't really very smithsy at all!

i originally heard this song in my teens and was immediately blown away by sound of it. it is just so dark and atmospheric. there is a real tension in the song that keeps you on the edge of your seat; the interplay between the oscillating tremolo rhythm guitar and the slide guitar lead part is just stunning.

lyrically the track does not disappoint. morrisey lays down some suitably dark material, drawing out every last piece of powerful imagery from the few choice lines.

there is an interesting background to the song here on wikipedia if you want to know more.

so with that in mind my song du jour is "how soon is now?" from the album "hatful of hollow". this is the official video for the song, as comissioned by the record company, but never approved by the band themselves. oh, and i guarantee that at least 95% of you will fall in love with the girl in the video...
